About HealthMarkets, Inc.
The company was founded in 1985 with the mission of providing individuals, families, the self-employed and small businesses with options that met their health insurance needs. The company became publicly traded in 1986 under the name UICI.
In April 2006, affiliates of The Blackstone Group, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners acquired UICI. With this action the company became privately held and the Company’s stock is no longer publicly traded. As part of a rebranding effort, the holding company was renamed HealthMarkets, Inc. in April 2006.
Following the merger, the stockholders of HealthMarkets, Inc. include members of management, insurance agents contracted with its distribution subsidiary company and the investment affiliates of the private equity firms.
